Xperia Play Reviewed by U.S. Site

Finally, after getting lots of exposure from Chinese websites, the Xperia Play is being reviewed by a U.S. gadget site. The guys over at Engadget have gotten hold of a test unit and gave the unit a spin.

Here’s what we know so far about the Xperia Play

  • 4 inch multi-touch 854×480 screen
  • Mobile Bravia Engine
  • Qualcomm Single Core Processor
  • Adreno 205 GPU
  • 512 MB RAM

These specifications were verified to be correct, however since the unit tested was only a prototype then this could possibly change during the official launching of the product. A few concerns were encountered during the testing which is listed below.

  • Wi-Fi does not work (the device comes with a Broadcom BCM4329 wireless chip), which could possibly be a driver issue
  • .avi and .mkv videos are not natively recognized

The good thing about the unit is that it is solidly built. It is much easier to hold and use compared to the PSP Go. Since no games are available at the moment it was tested using an emulator running PlayStation One games (Ridge Racer Revolution, Gundam Battle Assault 2) which came out pretty well.

Expect to learn more details about the Xperia Play during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) to be held this February 14-17 at Barcelona, Spain.
