Today is a good day for owners of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play and Xperia Arc. Earlier on today, the guys over at XDA-Developers managed to root the Xperia Arc, with the promise of the Play coming next. They didn’t take very long in doing so and now, both the Xperia Arc and Xperia Play can be rooted.
Which ever phone you’re rooting, you will need to have the boot loader unlocked before proceeding. You will then need to download the correct file for your phone. For the Play you will need to be running v184 global firmware. For the Arc you will need either V183 UK firmware, v181 global firmware (for both the LT15i and LT15a). Greek and Hong Kong versions are coming tomorrow as is the Neo version. Head on over to here for the Play files or here for the Arc files.
Once you’ve got the files, you’ll need to copy the downloaded package to the same location as fastboot that you used for unlocking the bootloader. Then open a terminal window and type in fastbook flash system YOURDOWNLOADFILE.img (replace yourdownloadfile with the name of the file you downloaded) and wait until it’s done before rebooting to enjoy your rooted handset.
