George Francis “Geohot” Hotz who earlier this year hacked the PS3 posted a message on his website stating that he wants to be one of the first people to get an Xperia Play during its launch date. If you think Sony will be happy about this since this means one additional sold unit well they won’t. Geohot will actually be making the Xperia Play his next project, and by next project this means that he will hack the smartphone.
Sony has already filed a lawsuit against Geohot and other hackers involved in hacking the PS3 yet the person is again putting himself in the crosshairs of Sony by announcing to the world his intention to hack the Xperia Play.
Why is hacking the Xperia Play such a big deal? Well with a hacked device you will be able to run any homebrew games on it as well as pirated games. This means that you can install almost any game to it without passing through the regular legal channels.
By the way, did I mention that hacking or jailbreaking a smartphone is actually legal under U.S. law? If you check the official description of Sony Ericsson on the Xperia Play it states “Xperia Play-The First PlayStation Certified Android Smartphone”.
