The other 2011 handsets, such as the original Xperia Arc and Neo models, Xperia Play, Xperia Mini, Xperia Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, Xperia Active will get the update in late April to early May 2012. The Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will also be getting an update to ICS at the same time as the Xperia family.

Despite their recent ‘boo-boo’ when they mistakenly posted news of their offering of 50GB of cloud storage space free for Xperia owners, Sony Ericsson have moved to confirm that the offer should go live soon, just not as soon as they announced it would on their official blog.

Xperia handset owners should, at some point in the near future, be entitled to a whopping 50GB of storage, via an app on Xperia handsets (which will be downloaded from the Android Market) through cloud storage provider Box in a deal struck between themselves and Sony Ericsson.

“On Monday afternoon, we mistakenly posted a promo offering Xperia owners 50 GB of free storage via the Box for Android mobile app. While we’re really excited about working with Box down the road, this offer is not active today. We are in the midst of finalising the details of this promotion and are working to provide this offer very soon to all Xperia customers so stay tuned” -Sony Ericsson.

EA and Sony Ericsson are offering Xperia Play customers an all new exclusive title in the form of the hugely popular football game Fifa 12. To top off the excitement, the game is also free to download and will be exclusive to the Xperia Play until February 21st next year.

“With FIFA 12, fans of football can expect improved gameplay depth, authentic commentaries, updated teams from the world’s top leagues, and all new replay systems and stadium designs to enhance the FIFA experience” – Sony Ericsson

As expected, the game includes the same style of gameplay that was found in Fifa 10 and Fifa 11 on the Xperia Play as it is optimized fully for use on the handset, using it’s unique control system and game pad. Fifa 12 can be downloaded now (from the game launcher on the Xperia Play) and it’s a big download, over 1.5GB, so  a Wi-Fi connection will probably be required.

Sony Ericsson have declared themselves as the first mobile phone manufacturer to include support for WebGL technology on their handsets. WebGL is a technology that allows 3D graphic rendering to be viewed on browsers without the need for additional plugins and although the technology has been around for a little while now, Sony Ericsson have jumped in with open arms to integrate WebGL support into it’s range of 2011 Xperia handsets.

WebGL support was added to the newer Xperia range via the recent Android 2.3.4 update, although when the update was released Sony Ericsson kept this new feature quiet, choosing to release the information in a press release seperately. The WebGL technology does need the higher specifications found in the latest, more powerful Xperia handsets, to run as from Sony Ericsson explains:

Devices such as Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ neo and Xperia™ pro are equipped with a 1 GHz Snapdragon™ processor and an Adreno™ 205 graphics processor, so even if the processing power is not in parity with desktop computers, there are enough processing capabilities to create astonishing 3D web applications.

An update to the custom ROM CyanogenMod has been released, after a short delay on the expected release date. Version 7.1 of CyanogenMod is now available to those adventurous Xperia owners as it is now working on all of the 2011 Xperia handsets including the Xperia Play, Xperia Arc, Xperia Mini and Mini Pro, Xperia Ray and the Xperia Neo handsets. Even the Xperia X8 is catered for with version 7.1.

The FreeXperia team have been working tirelessly to get this custom ROM up and running on the Xperia range of phones and Sony Ericsson themselves shocked the developer scene recently by handing the team 20 Xperia handsets and technical information in order to help make CyanogenMod work with their products. It has to be noted however that despite encouraging the developers in such a way, Sony Ericsson still stand by the ‘rule’ that if you modify your Xperia handset by flashing a custom ROM to it, you will invalidate your warranty so be warned before taking the plunge.

Version 7.1 brings a number of new and updated features to the custom ROM including brightness control and a rather useful camera timer. Bluetooth mouse support is also added with the new version. A full changelog can be found below:

Coming less than a month after the availability of the Xperia Ray in the country and with an estimated delivery date of the 4th week in October, Indian online retailer flipkart have listed the highly anticipated new sporty handset from Sony Ericsson – the Xperia Active – on their website as a pre-order.

Also known as the ST17i, the Xperia Active is a new addition to the Xperia range and it’s features include a 5 mega pixel camera and both water and dust resistance. The handset comes preinstalled with version 2.3 of the Android operating system.

Pricing for the Xperia Active is Rs. 19990 which includes free delivery and a free bluetooth headset. If purchased through flipkart, it is also possible to pay cash on delivery.

Not to panic anyone looking to purchase an Xperia Play but, US carrier Verizon are offering the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play handset for free to customers who sign up for a new 2 year contract before October 6th, yes that’s tomorrow in the States!

Initially the handset was available on Verizon for $199.99 but, the company has been reducing the Xperia Play steadily over the past eight months since it was released to $99.99 and then more recently to $49.99  to match the price of the deal offered by rival carrier AT&T. Now however, Verizon are offering a $49.99 discount on the handset along with a $50 online discount which means buyers can pick up the Xperia Play for free when signing up for a new contract online. It’s been ten years since Sony and Ericsson started their joint venture. Ericsson was already a major player in the mobile phone market and joining with Sony meant they could expand their technology even further. The joint venture began October 1st 2001 but, it wasn’t until 2002 that the first Sony Ericsson phone was released, the Sony Ericsson T68i, an upgrade to the Ericsson T68 which at the time of launch was one of the most feature packed phones on the market. The T68 was the first Ericsson phone to include a color screen and when the T68i was released, it included two-way MMS with full SMIL implementation for the first time. The Sony Ericsson T68i did not include a camera but, a camera add on was released near the end of the handsets life cycle.

Since then, Sony Ericsson have had highs and lows but, they are renowned for their camera phones, with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc being one of the best, if not the best camera phone on the market at the moment. The latest Sony Ericsson phones use even more of Sony’s features, such as mobile BRAVIA reality display on the Xperia Arc, Neo and Pro, while the Xperia Play carries the Sony PlayStation certification.

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications established today

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, the joint venture between
Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson and Sony Corporation, will today start
its operations, following final approvals from the European Commission
and other regulatory authorities. The new company will start its
operations today and is aiming to become the number one player in mobile
multimedia products within 5 years.

“I am proud to announce that we have received the final approvals and we
can start operations according to our initial plans”, says Katsumi
Ihara, President of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications. “We are 3,500

Great news for US buyers – the Xperia Ray is officially available to buy in your country in it’s unlocked form, Sony Ericsson have announced.

The Xperia Ray is listed at online retail sites including newegg.com and is for sale at $424.99 with no carrier tie in.We did wonder if the handset would be tied in with an AT&T release due to specifications released when the handset appeared on the FCC website however, this isn’t the case and the Xperia Ray is fully unlocked and ready to go.

Coming preinstalled with Android version 2.3.4, the Ray features the same camera as the powerful Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, namely an 8.1-megapixel camera with an Exmor R CMOS sensor. The Ray also adds a front facing camera into the mix for a more ‘socially aware’ handset with amazing power and features that is sure to take the US by storm.

Online retailer Expansys have already reduced the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play in the past couple of months however, they have now reduced the handset even further to an amazingly low price of £199.99.

The Xperia Play is now priced at the same cost as the Xperia Mini handset and that £199.99 includes shipping costs too. Expansys currently are out of stock of the Play, presumably because of the rush to buy them at the new price however, they are due to receive new stock by the 7th of October and are taking orders currently.
