According to a blog post over at Vodafone Australia, the company will begin testing Android 2.3 on the Xperia X10 Mini Pro in around 6 weeks time.

The blog post highlights questions about Android updates that they’ve been receiving regarding when updates will be released, what stage the updates are at and indicates what version of Android the various handsets are currently running and what the next update will be.

The blog post lists various handsets and two Sony Ericsson phones, the Xperia X10 and the X10 Mini Pro. The post says that the X10 is currently on 1.6 and that 2.3 is currently being tested and is due to be completed in about 2 weeks. When it comes to the X10 Mini though, the company say that the testing hasn’t been scheduled yet but, that they anticipate testing it in 6 weeks time.

Sony Ericsson have already said they will not be updating the X10 Mini, X10 Mini Pro or X8. So either Vodafone Australia have got this wrong, or Sony Ericsson have done a u-turn on what they’ve previously said. Due to Sony Ericsson’s previous statements, either scenario could be likely as Sony Ericsson previously announced that those handsets along with the Xperia X10 would not be updated past Android 2.1 but, Sony Ericsson changed their mind with the X10 and said 2.3 would be released and was pushed out last week to handsets.

We’ll be keeping our eyes on the Vodafone blog and Sony Ericsson blog to see if any thing is adjusted or any announcements are made. We at SE-Xperia hope that Vodafone are correct though.

Sony Ericsson have announced that they are releasing two more handsets to the Xperia range in the coming months. This time we see a successor to the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro. The new handsets are called Xperia Mini and Mini Pro. Hopefully the names of the new handsets won’t cause too much confusion between consumers and retailers when making a purchase.

As the name suggest, the Xperia Mini Pro like the X10 Mini Pro and Xperia Pro, will feature a QWERTY slide out keyboard to make messaging on the go even easier. Both the Xperia Mini and Mini Pro feature a larger screen by 0.45 inches, coming in at 3 inches. The extra space should also mean the keyboard is more comfortable to type with on the Mini Pro and on screen typing on both handsets should be easier. The four corner UI remains on the two new handsets but, has seen an improvement, where by the homescreen can now display up to 16 apps.

The camera on the handsets hasn’t been improved as such, it’s still a 5 megapixel camera. However the Xperia Mini and Mini Pro will support 720p video recording, which makes these two handsets the smallest HD video recording smartphones around. Sony Ericsson are launching the handsets with Android 2.3 and hopefully we should see timely updates from them this time around.

Rumors are flying around at the moment that Sony Ericsson are about to make an announcement of three new handsets, as soon as this week. Two of the handsets there’s a few details about, where as the third handset nothing is known of it.

The first handset rumoured to be announced this week is the Sony Ericsson Xperia Mango which is said to be the successor to the X10 Mini Pro, as it features a slide out keyboard while being mini in form. The screen is rumored to be larger than the Mini Pro though, coming in at around 3 inches. Likewise, the second handset the Sony Ericsson Xperia Smultron is also said to feature a 3 inch display. The Smultron will not feature a slide out keyboard, so is tipped to be the successor to the Mini Pro.

Other rumors suggest that both handsets will come with a 1GHz processor and Android 2.3.3. There are no rumored specifications for the third handset, although there is a lot of speculation about what the third handset could be, ranging from it being a dual core handset, or a Windows Phone 7 powered phone.

When Sony Ericsson announced that they had changed their plans for the Xperia X10 and that it would not be stuck on Android 2.1 but, would instead be upgraded to Android 2.3 during the end of Q2/start of Q3, this pleased many customers. However it still left some of Sony Ericsson’s customers rather angry, as while this was great news for owners of the Xperia X10, it was also announced that the X10 Mini, X10 Mini Pro and Xperia X8 were not part of these plans and would remain on Android 2.1 as previously stated.

When Sony Ericsson have been questioned about this, on both Facebook and Twitter, they’ve given the response that the update would not be coming to those handsets, the same response they gave users asking, or complaining about the X10 not being upgraded. Today however, the Sony Ericsson UK Facebook page team have provided a different answer, in fact different to what they said only yesterday. Instead of the usual, it’s not coming to the X10 Mini range or X8, the reply was that there are no confirmed dates at the moment but to keep checking the Sony Ericsson Product Blog, as any new announcements will be posted on there first. While it doesn’t specifically say an Android update, the reply is different to what we’ve seen before and looks very promising. Someone has already jumped on this answer and questioned it, as to whether there will be an official announcement following. Hopefully Sony Ericsson will provide a further Android update to the users who purchased the Mini versions of the X10 as well. Because while X10 owners are now happier, there are still many X10 Mini, Mini Pro and X8 owners very unhappy and this could change things around. However this pans out, we will keep you updated.

As part of Sony Ericsson’s weekly Facebook competition, this week we see a Lime Green X10 Mini Pro in the “limelight”, excuse the pun. As always, all you need to do is visit their competition page , enter your details, along with selecting the right answer to their question.

This week the question is, “Which application allows you to organize all of your photos on the Xperia™ X10 mini pro?” To make it even easier, Sony Ericsson have made it multiple choice, with a selection of three possible answers.

It’s worth noting that while the text specifies a Mini Pro in lime green and the first picture signifies the Mini Pro, the picture displaying the back is in fact of an X10 Mini, which we have seen in Lime Green, where as the Mini Pro, we haven’t actually seen in Lime Green before. Whether it’s a Mini or a Mini Pro though, it’s a definitely worth entering into the competition for only 5-10 seconds of your time.

We all know that Sony Ericsson aren’t great at keeping their upcoming handsets a secret. We saw photos of the Xperia X10 before an official announcement came from Sony Ericsson and even the more recently announced Xperia Arc, we’d seen a while before Sony Ericsson officially announced the handset, in the form of the Anzu. More photos have been leaked of an Xperia handset, this time round it’s the “Xperia Duo”. The Duo appears to be a successor to the Xperia X10 Mini or Mini Pro, which we’ve already seen a photo of before and it’s benchmark. Here are some more photos to whet your appetite. (...)
Read the rest of Leaked photos of Xperia Duo appear

Despite all the uproar about Sony Ericsson’s flagship Xperia handset having an outdated OS when it launched with Android 1.6 and when the company released Android 2.1, when 2.3 was just around the corner, the company have announced that they will not update the Xperia X10, X10 Mini, X10 Mini Pro, or Xperia X8 past Android 2.1. Sony Ericsson have already come under fire for the delay of Android 2.1 on the handset and several petitions were started online asking Sony Ericsson to skip Android 2.1 and go straight to 2.2. This wasn’t to happen though, as 2.2 aka Froyo, will not be making it’s way to the Xperia X10 range of handsets. For the US particularly, this has given the handset a minimal lifespan, consisting of less than 6 months. Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson don’t see it this way. They have promised further minor updates to the handset, such as the multi touch update, coming sometime this quarter but, the Android version will not be going any higher.

When questioned via Twitter, Sony Ericsson UK replied with that they believed Android 2.1 was adequate for the X10 range. As a general statement across Twitter, they stated “We believe the features included in the Android 2.1 phone are on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of 2.2″. A direct reply to a user message consisted of essentially the same statement “We believe the version of Android 2.1 which we have implemented on the X10 is suitable for the hardware of these particular models”. This of course means, that the Xperia X10 will not gain flash support and despite minor updates in the future, this announcement will have effectively ended the life span of the X10, not to mention the imminent release of the Xperia Arc, which will come with Android 2.3 when released.

Sony Ericsson has launched the latest firmware for its Xperia line of smartphones. The targeted models are the Xperia X10, Xperia X10 Mini, Xperia X10 Mini Pro and the Xperia X8. A couple of weeks ago these units availed of the Android 2.1 upgrade. The latest upgrade is not available in all areas at the moment though since it will be available depending on your country and operator. Those who live in areas that still do not have an upgrade option for Android 2.1 have to wait a little bit longer.

The latest firmware upgrade is an addition to the already existing Android 2.1 but you won’t be getting this over the air. To get this upgrade you would need your PC and the Sony Ericsson update Service application running. Just connect your phone to your PC and the software will check your firmware and do the necessary changes if needed.

Here’s what to expect from the latest firmware upgrade

- Changes in the in-call volume

- Faster Mediascape and Timescape

- Keyboard facelift

- You won’t be able to root the phone after the update

Owners of the Xperia line from Sony Ericsson would be pleased to know that the company will be releasing updates to the phone for up to two years since it was launched.

Sony Ericsson are releasing three “experience packs” for the X10 range of handsets. The experience packs are named XP110, XP120 and XP130. Each pack will retail for different prices, as each pack contains different types of items. Pricing is however, currently unknown.

First up, we have the XP110 Fitness Experience Pack. As the name suggests, it’s perfect for those who want the best fitness experience with their handset. The recently released Live View Bluetooth device is included in the pack, along with a wristband and clip. Unfortunately, the wristband is compatible with the X10 Mini and Mini Pro, rather than the full sized Xperia X10. However the Live View device can be used with all three devices. Also included in the pack is the SportyPal Pro app, which again is compatible with all three Xperia X10 models, not to mention the Xperia X8.

Likewise, the XP130 pack, dubbed the Design Experience Pack, isn’t completely compatible with the full size Xperia X10, or the Mini Pro for that matter. The biggest highlight of the Design Pack, is that it includes the three fashion covers we recently saw available as an Orange exclusive for the X10 Mini. Which is great news for those not on Orange and loved the back plate designs. As well as the back covers, the pack also includes charms, lanyards, style wallpapers, as well as three apps: Fashion News, Celebrity Gossip and Chip Chick.

Last but not least, we also have the XP120 Business Experience Pack. This is the only pack which isn’t limited to one or the other X10 handsets but, rather features items for all the models. It comes with a life time license for the Office Suite Pro app and 6 months for WaveSecure. Also included is the VH700 Bluetooth handsfree kit (which we’ll be reviewing shortly) and a micro USB cable.

Owners of the Xperia X10 in the UK with O2 branded handsets will be pleased to know that O2 have finally released the Android 2.1 update. It took longer than most would hope it would but, it’s finally here. So if you’ve got an O2 branded Xperia X10, X10 Mini or X10 Mini Pro, you should now be able to update your handset from Android 1.6 to Android 2.1.

While I’m sure many were sure O2 would be the last network in the UK to release this update, this isn’t the case. T-Mobile users are still awaiting the Android upgrade, as are Vodafone customers. T-Mobile have however assured customers that the update will begin rolling out some time during next week.
