While this initially sounds like great news, there are unfortunately two failings to this promotion. Firstly, my partner received an email offering 10% off the purchase price of an Xperia Arc S, or a Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray but, I then received an email offering me only 5% off with a different promotional code. A bit later on, another email that I’ve used with Sony Ericsson also received the email, this time with a 15% discount.

Sounds pretty tempting but, many high street retailers are offering the handsets for considerably less. Before the New Year, we saw the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S at Phones4U for only £199.99 as an upgrade, or £239.99 for a pay as you go handset, including a £10 top up. In comparison, the Sony Ericsson website is selling the Xperia Arc S for £369 and to compete would need to offer a minimum of 40% off the current selling price.

For anyone who hasn’t picked up either of these handsets, it’s worth shopping around for the best mobile phone deal as on occasions like this, even with a promotional code, it can be cheaper to shop elsewhere.

We’re expecting to see “something big” which is likely to come in the form on an Xperia Arc successor. Other Xperia models that are expected to be unveiled include an Xperia Neo successor as well as an Xperia Mini successor.

We’ve seen many, many price drops for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, while the Xperia Arc and Arc S remained at a relatively high price. Until now that it. Carphone Warehouse have the Xperia Arc S available for £269.99 sim free, which is a good price but, another UK retailer is offering the handset for as low as £199.99.

With Phones4U you can do a pay as you go upgrade, which means providing them with a pay as you go number which hasn’t been used for an upgrade in the last 6 months (terms vary by network) and get the phone for just £199.99 and Phones4U handsets are unlocked. Pay as you go upgrades can only be done in store. Alternatively, if you haven’t got a pay as you go number you can use, they are doing the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S for £229.99 with a £10 top up.

To make this deal even sweeter, if you buy the Xperia Arc S before December 31st, Sony Ericsson are offering you £25 cash back. All you need to do to get your £25 cash back from Sony Ericsson, is fill in this form and and send it to them before January 31st 2012. Sony Ericsson are also offering cash back on the Xperia Ray and the original Xperia Arc.

Despite their recent ‘boo-boo’ when they mistakenly posted news of their offering of 50GB of cloud storage space free for Xperia owners, Sony Ericsson have moved to confirm that the offer should go live soon, just not as soon as they announced it would on their official blog.

Xperia handset owners should, at some point in the near future, be entitled to a whopping 50GB of storage, via an app on Xperia handsets (which will be downloaded from the Android Market) through cloud storage provider Box in a deal struck between themselves and Sony Ericsson.

“On Monday afternoon, we mistakenly posted a promo offering Xperia owners 50 GB of free storage via the Box for Android mobile app. While we’re really excited about working with Box down the road, this offer is not active today. We are in the midst of finalising the details of this promotion and are working to provide this offer very soon to all Xperia customers so stay tuned” -Sony Ericsson.

EA and Sony Ericsson are offering Xperia Play customers an all new exclusive title in the form of the hugely popular football game Fifa 12. To top off the excitement, the game is also free to download and will be exclusive to the Xperia Play until February 21st next year.

“With FIFA 12, fans of football can expect improved gameplay depth, authentic commentaries, updated teams from the world’s top leagues, and all new replay systems and stadium designs to enhance the FIFA experience” – Sony Ericsson

As expected, the game includes the same style of gameplay that was found in Fifa 10 and Fifa 11 on the Xperia Play as it is optimized fully for use on the handset, using it’s unique control system and game pad. Fifa 12 can be downloaded now (from the game launcher on the Xperia Play) and it’s a big download, over 1.5GB, so  a Wi-Fi connection will probably be required.

Sony Ericsson have declared themselves as the first mobile phone manufacturer to include support for WebGL technology on their handsets. WebGL is a technology that allows 3D graphic rendering to be viewed on browsers without the need for additional plugins and although the technology has been around for a little while now, Sony Ericsson have jumped in with open arms to integrate WebGL support into it’s range of 2011 Xperia handsets.

WebGL support was added to the newer Xperia range via the recent Android 2.3.4 update, although when the update was released Sony Ericsson kept this new feature quiet, choosing to release the information in a press release seperately. The WebGL technology does need the higher specifications found in the latest, more powerful Xperia handsets, to run as from Sony Ericsson explains:

Devices such as Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ neo and Xperia™ pro are equipped with a 1 GHz Snapdragon™ processor and an Adreno™ 205 graphics processor, so even if the processing power is not in parity with desktop computers, there are enough processing capabilities to create astonishing 3D web applications.

We heard the rumours a couple of weeks ago that Sony were looking to buy Ericsson out of their joint partnership which started 10 years ago this month. We can now confirm that Sony have paid Ericsson €1.05 billion in exchange for Ericsson’s 50 percent stake.

Sony will have cross licensing of five patent families which will be essential for Sony to fully move into the smart phone market. With Sony assuming full ownership of the venture, they will now be able to integrate their smartphones with their other products even more closely, such as the Sony Tablet S like other manufacturers are doing, such as Samsung and Apple.

The seperation however, won’t be finalised until January, pending regulatory approval.

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and Sony Corporation (“Sony”) today announced that Sony will acquire Ericsson’s 50 percent stake in Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (“Sony Ericsson”), making the mobile handset business a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony.

The transaction gives Sony an opportunity to rapidly integrate smartphones into its broad array of network-connected consumer electronics devices – including tablets, televisions and personal computers – for the benefit of consumers and the growth of its business. The transaction also provides Sony with a broad intellectual property (IP) cross-licensing agreement covering all products and services of Sony as well as ownership of five essential patent families relating to wireless handset technology.

As part of the transaction, Ericsson will receive a cash consideration of EUR 1.05 billion.

During the past ten years the mobile market has shifted focus from simple mobile phones to rich smartphones that include access to internet services and content. The transaction is a logical strategic step that takes into account the nature of this evolution and its impact on the marketplace.

This means that the synergies for Ericsson in having both a world leading technology and telecoms services portfolio and a handset operation are decreasing. Today Ericsson’s focus is on the global wireless market as a whole; how wireless connectivity can benefit people, business and society beyond just phones. Consistent with that mission, by setting up a wireless connectivity initiative, Ericsson and Sony will work to drive and develop the market’s adoption of connectivity across multiple platforms.

“This acquisition makes sense for Sony and Ericsson, and it will make the difference for consumers, who want to connect with content wherever they are, whenever they want. With a vibrant smartphone business and by gaining access to important strategic IP, notably a broad cross-license agreement, our four-screen strategy is in place. When Sony Ericsson started its operations on October 1, 2001, it combined the unprofitable handset operations from Ericsson and Sony. Following a successful turnaround the company has become a market leader in the development of feature phones by integrating Sony’s strong consumer products knowledge and Ericsson’s telecommunications technology leadership. The WalkmanTM phone and Cyber-shotTM phone are well known examples.

With the successful introduction of the P1 in 2007, Sony Ericsson early on established itself in the smartphone segment. More recently, the company has successfully made the transition from feature phones to Android-based Xperia(TM) smartphones. By the end of the third quarter of 2011, Sony Ericsson held a market share of 11 percent (by value) in the Android phone market, representing 80 percent of the company’s third quarter sales. During its ten years in operation Sony Ericsson has generated approximately EUR 1.5 billion of profit and paid dividends totalling approximately EUR 1.9 billion to its parent companies. Prominent models include “XperiaTM arc” and “XperiaTM mini” which received 2011 EISA Awards, while recent notable additions to the lineup include “XperiaTM PLAY” and “XperiaTM arc S”.

The transaction, which has been approved by appropriate decision-making bodies of both companies, is expected to close in January 2012, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Ericsson has accounted for its 50 percent share in Sony Ericsson according to the equity method. Following completion of the transaction, Ericsson will have no outstanding guarantees relating to Sony Ericsson and will no longer account for Sony Ericsson as an investment on balance sheet. The transaction will result in a positive capital gain for Ericsson which will be defined after closing of the transaction.

Developer SilverTree Media, who brought us the cute and addictive game Cordy, have announced that they are bringing their new, anticipated title to the Xperia Play first and it will be a Play exclusive for one month prior to release on other handsets.

Entitled “Sleepy Jack”, the new game is an arcade styled platform title where players control the sleepy Jack throughout his psychedelic dreams with collecting, shooting and flying elements included alongside beautiful graphics. The game was seen at Gamescom in it’s beta form and the Sleepy Jack trailer video can be viewed below:

Coming less than a month after the availability of the Xperia Ray in the country and with an estimated delivery date of the 4th week in October, Indian online retailer flipkart have listed the highly anticipated new sporty handset from Sony Ericsson – the Xperia Active – on their website as a pre-order.

Also known as the ST17i, the Xperia Active is a new addition to the Xperia range and it’s features include a 5 mega pixel camera and both water and dust resistance. The handset comes preinstalled with version 2.3 of the Android operating system.

Pricing for the Xperia Active is Rs. 19990 which includes free delivery and a free bluetooth headset. If purchased through flipkart, it is also possible to pay cash on delivery.

Notable titles Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Dead Space are on offer along with two Need for Speed titles, Need for Speed: Shift and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

Instructions, as given by Sony Ericsson, on how to redeem the free games are as follows:

Step 1 – Slide the phone open to reveal the on-screen Game Launcher which will show the 4 free games available.
Step 2 – You’ll then be prompted to connect to a WiFi network.
Step 3 – Once connected, simply touch the icon of the game you want and your download will begin!
