We’ve provided information on how to root the Xperia handsets here before and in the past rooting has always been for a positive reason. The main reason for rooting is that it allows you to remove preinstalled apps, either installed by Sony Ericsson such as Timescape, or network specific apps such as Vodafone’s 360 application. There are of course other positive reasons to root your handset and with Google Android being a pretty open OS, rooting hasn’t been much of a problem. That may change soon however.

Today is a good day for owners of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play and Xperia Arc. Earlier on today, the guys over at XDA-Developers managed to root the Xperia Arc, with the promise of the Play coming next. They didn’t take very long in doing so and now, both the Xperia Arc and Xperia Play can be rooted.

For those of you who have already upgraded to Android 2.1, or perhaps have been holding off on confirmation of the newer Android OS being rootable on the X10, there’s good news. Several members of the XDA Developers have been able to root their Xperia X10 handsets running Android 2.1. Which also means if you’ve gone ahead and rooted your handset to edit the default.prop file to upgrade, you can now edit the values back, which others are reportedly doing.

Users have been able to root their Xperia X10 handsets for a while now. Shortly after root access was gained for the Xperia X10, both the X10 Mini and Mini Pro became rootable. Now an app has been released onto the market making the process even simpler. It does however seem that you will need the ability to install third party apps enabled. By downloading Universal Androot from the Android Market (the QR code is below but, a QR/barcode scanner app is required) the application will provide you with a list of all the supported phones and a list of those that aren’t supported.
