SE-Xperia » Xperia Ray http://se-xperia.com Unofficial Sony Ericsson Xperia news blog Thu, 25 Jul 2013 11:38:43 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Confirmed: ICS isn’t coming to the Xperia Play http://se-xperia.com/confirmed-ics-isnt-coming-to-the-xperia-play/ http://se-xperia.com/confirmed-ics-isnt-coming-to-the-xperia-play/#comments Fri, 25 May 2012 21:42:45 +0000 http://se-xperia.com/?p=2276 Yesterday we saw what could have been described as an oversight on Sonys part. On the information page regarding the Android 4.0 update the Xperia Play was missing from the list of handsets that were due to be upgraded.

Sony have announced that this wasn’t a mistake and the Xperia Play will not be receiving the Android 4.0 update, despite having worked on it extensively to the point of releasing a beta version of the ROM. In releasing the beta version however, Sony found several issues with games and compatibility which, inevitably has led to the decision of the Xperia Play staying on Gingerbread. After extensive testing of ICS, a consistent and stable experience couldn’t be guaranteed on the Xperia Play, especially with gaming.

Along with the bombshell announcement, Sony have released information regarding the Android 4.0 update for other handsets. Following on from Android 4 being rolled out for the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray, the update will begin rolling out next week for the other Xperia handsets released in 2011, minus the Play – Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. The Xperia S will be the first NXT Xperia handset to be updated at the end of June, with the Xperia P next to receive it. The Xperia U will receive the update later in Q3. The updates starting from next week will update the handsets to Android 4.0.4 and the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray will be upgraded from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4.

ICS Xperia update continues to rollout Sony confirm http://se-xperia.com/ics-xperia-update-continues-to-rollout-sony-confirm/ http://se-xperia.com/ics-xperia-update-continues-to-rollout-sony-confirm/#comments Thu, 26 Apr 2012 09:36:02 +0000 http://se-xperia.com/?p=2179 As most Xperia owners will know by now, Sony are busy rolling out the much awaited update to the Android operating software – namely Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich – on Xperia handsets that were released in 2011 or later eg the Xperia S, Xperia Arc, Xperia Neo and so on.

Although the company don’t give specific release dates, they are keen to keep us up to date and assure Xperia users that ICS is on the way and have posted an update doing just that. The ICS rollout is already hitting the Nordic countries and Sony are continuing to push forward with the release globally although networks are also involved in bringing the update to customers which may slow things down a little.

A list of already released Ice Cream Sandwich updates can be found at the Sony Blog and instructions on how to upgrade your 2011 Xperia handset can be found here.

Developer ICS ROM released for 2011 Xperia models http://se-xperia.com/developer-ics-rom-released-for-2011-xperia-models/ http://se-xperia.com/developer-ics-rom-released-for-2011-xperia-models/#comments Sat, 31 Mar 2012 18:41:16 +0000 http://se-xperia.com/?p=2171 Sony have released a beta, aka developer version of the upcoming Android update, Ice Cream Sandwich. The update is for advanced developers, who have extensive knowledge in how to install and switch between ROMs, there fore shouldn’t be installed by any one who doesn’t really know what they’re doing.

If however, you’re comfortable with this, you will need an unlocked Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V, Xperia Ray or an Xperia Play running 4.0.2.A.0.42 and an unlocked bootloader. WiFi and Bluetooth are two key features that aren’t included in the beta version of ICS, nor are Google Mobile Services, including Gmail, Google Maps and Face Unlock.

Sony Ericsson offer up to 15% off Xperia handsets but, no match for High Street prices http://se-xperia.com/sony-ericsson-offer-up-to-15-off-xperia-handsets-but-no-match-for-high-street-prices/ http://se-xperia.com/sony-ericsson-offer-up-to-15-off-xperia-handsets-but-no-match-for-high-street-prices/#comments Wed, 25 Jan 2012 17:41:59 +0000 http://se-xperia.com/?p=2015
If you’ve signed up to receive emails from Sony Ericsson, either through their support website or forums, or through Facebook chances are you may have received an email from them recently offering you so much off an Xperia Arc S or Xperia Ray.

While this initially sounds like great news, there are unfortunately two failings to this promotion. Firstly, my partner received an email offering 10% off the purchase price of an Xperia Arc S, or a Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray but, I then received an email offering me only 5% off with a different promotional code. A bit later on, another email that I’ve used with Sony Ericsson also received the email, this time with a 15% discount.

Sounds pretty tempting but, many high street retailers are offering the handsets for considerably less. Before the New Year, we saw the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S at Phones4U for only £199.99 as an upgrade, or £239.99 for a pay as you go handset, including a £10 top up. In comparison, the Sony Ericsson website is selling the Xperia Arc S for £369 and to compete would need to offer a minimum of 40% off the current selling price.

For anyone who hasn’t picked up either of these handsets, it’s worth shopping around for the best mobile phone deal as on occasions like this, even with a promotional code, it can be cheaper to shop elsewhere.

Let us know in the comments if you too received this email from Sony Ericsson and what percentage discount they offered you. Any one get above 15% off?

Sony release Smart Extras to enhance your mobile experience http://se-xperia.com/sony-release-smart-extras-to-enhance-your-mobile-experience/ http://se-xperia.com/sony-release-smart-extras-to-enhance-your-mobile-experience/#comments Tue, 10 Jan 2012 10:59:44 +0000 http://se-xperia.com/?p=2032 smart extras

More new products from Sony have been announced, in the form of three ‘smart’ accessories that will not only be compatible with the new Xperia NXT range of handsets but, with any Android smartphone with bluetooth or NFC support enabled.

First up in the Smart Extras range is the SmartWatch which is basically a wireless display which can mount onto the provided ‘watch strap’ and allows the display of calls, messages and social networking updates in a similar (but better) way to the Live View accessory that Sony Ericsson brought out. Next is the rather exciting Smart Wireless Headset Pro, a bluetooth stereo headset that can also be used as a standalone MP3 player and FM radio or can connect to your phone and will also display call information, text messages and Facebook or Twitter updates. Thirdly, Sony have released a new Smart Extension SDK which will allow developers access to create exciting new applications to enhance and customise both the SmartWatch and the Smart Wireless Headset Pro.

An official product demonstration of the Smart Watch and Smart Headset can be viewed in the video below:

News is also coming in regarding the NFC (near field communication) tags that Sony have produced. These will apparently also be added to the Smart Extras range in the future.
