SE-Xperia » Xperia Active Unofficial Sony Ericsson Xperia news blog Thu, 25 Jul 2013 11:38:43 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Confirmed: ICS isn’t coming to the Xperia Play Fri, 25 May 2012 21:42:45 +0000 Yesterday we saw what could have been described as an oversight on Sonys part. On the information page regarding the Android 4.0 update the Xperia Play was missing from the list of handsets that were due to be upgraded.

Sony have announced that this wasn’t a mistake and the Xperia Play will not be receiving the Android 4.0 update, despite having worked on it extensively to the point of releasing a beta version of the ROM. In releasing the beta version however, Sony found several issues with games and compatibility which, inevitably has led to the decision of the Xperia Play staying on Gingerbread. After extensive testing of ICS, a consistent and stable experience couldn’t be guaranteed on the Xperia Play, especially with gaming.

Along with the bombshell announcement, Sony have released information regarding the Android 4.0 update for other handsets. Following on from Android 4 being rolled out for the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray, the update will begin rolling out next week for the other Xperia handsets released in 2011, minus the Play – Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. The Xperia S will be the first NXT Xperia handset to be updated at the end of June, with the Xperia P next to receive it. The Xperia U will receive the update later in Q3. The updates starting from next week will update the handsets to Android 4.0.4 and the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray will be upgraded from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4.

ICS Xperia update continues to rollout Sony confirm Thu, 26 Apr 2012 09:36:02 +0000 As most Xperia owners will know by now, Sony are busy rolling out the much awaited update to the Android operating software – namely Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich – on Xperia handsets that were released in 2011 or later eg the Xperia S, Xperia Arc, Xperia Neo and so on.

Although the company don’t give specific release dates, they are keen to keep us up to date and assure Xperia users that ICS is on the way and have posted an update doing just that. The ICS rollout is already hitting the Nordic countries and Sony are continuing to push forward with the release globally although networks are also involved in bringing the update to customers which may slow things down a little.

A list of already released Ice Cream Sandwich updates can be found at the Sony Blog and instructions on how to upgrade your 2011 Xperia handset can be found here.

Sony release Smart Extras to enhance your mobile experience Tue, 10 Jan 2012 10:59:44 +0000 smart extras

More new products from Sony have been announced, in the form of three ‘smart’ accessories that will not only be compatible with the new Xperia NXT range of handsets but, with any Android smartphone with bluetooth or NFC support enabled.

First up in the Smart Extras range is the SmartWatch which is basically a wireless display which can mount onto the provided ‘watch strap’ and allows the display of calls, messages and social networking updates in a similar (but better) way to the Live View accessory that Sony Ericsson brought out. Next is the rather exciting Smart Wireless Headset Pro, a bluetooth stereo headset that can also be used as a standalone MP3 player and FM radio or can connect to your phone and will also display call information, text messages and Facebook or Twitter updates. Thirdly, Sony have released a new Smart Extension SDK which will allow developers access to create exciting new applications to enhance and customise both the SmartWatch and the Smart Wireless Headset Pro.

An official product demonstration of the Smart Watch and Smart Headset can be viewed in the video below:

News is also coming in regarding the NFC (near field communication) tags that Sony have produced. These will apparently also be added to the Smart Extras range in the future.

Sony Ericsson begin rolling out 2.3.4 globally for 2011 Xperia phones Mon, 31 Oct 2011 22:49:12 +0000

Just over a month ago, Android 2.3.4 began rolling out to Xperia phones in Nordic countries but, Sony Ericsson have now confirmed that the update is rolling out for the rest of the world.

Android 2.3.4 will be available for the Xperia Arc, Play, Neo, Ray, Mini, Mini Pro, Active, Pro, Neo V and Arc S as well as the non Xperia Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman.

The update adds Google Video Talk but, only to handsets with front facing cameras, such as the Xperia Play while the Xperia Arc will not get this due to the phone not featuring a front facing camera. It will however receive a 3D panorama sweep feature along with the other handsets, apart from the Xperia Play. Sony Ericsson have confirmed however that 2.3.4 does add HD video recording to the Play, something which was discovered shortly after the update became available in Nordic countries. Another much awaited feature is the ability to zoom in video mode. When the Arc was released, it wasn’t possible to zoom in the camera unless using the 2 megapixel mode, or in video. An update later added zoom for the camera but, left video zoom out.

Here’s the list of new features included with the update:

  • Google Talk with Video Chat for smartphones with front-facing cameras
  • Updated Facebook inside Xperia™ functionality for enhanced like, share and discover abilities.
  • Xperia™ smartphones introducing world’s first 3D Sweep Panorama functionality powered by Sony.
  • 16x video zoom
  • The software upgrade will enable consumers to turn their Xperia™  smartphone into a mini-mobile PC by connecting USB peripherals (mouse, keyboard or game controller) to Sony Ericsson LiveDock™ multimedia station. Connect the smartphone to a TV via HDMI to get a big screen experience.
  • Gesture input – text input by swiping the finger from one letter to the next.
  • WiFi DLNA
  • Screen capture – allows the user to share a screen grab from anywhere in the phone.
