Sony to update Xperia S to 4.0.4

Yesterday we reported that the Android 4.0 update for the Xperia S would be released in late Q2 and we can now confirm one of the reasons why the Xperia S is receiving the Android 4.0 update later than the 2011 range of Xperia handsets.

The Android Ice Cream Sandwich update for the 2011 Xperia phones has updated the handsets to Android 4.0.3, with 2.6.32 kernal. The Xperia S however, is most likely to be updated to Android 4.0.4, with a kernal version of 3.0.8. A snapshot of a leaked ROM from the Xperia NX shows the phone running a later kernal of 3.0.8 and 4.0.3 with a build number of 6.1.A.0.405.

Three to sell Xperia U on PAYG and contract in the UK

UK network Three are now stocking the Sony Xperia U handset. The smaller of the newest Xperia releases is available on pay as you go or free with a variety of contract options.

The Xperia U features a 3.5 inch reality display, a 1GHz dual core processor and a 5 megapixel camera with HD video recording support. On pay as you go with Three, the handset is priced at what seems like a reasonable £169.99. If ordering online you do have to add either £15 for an add on that gives 3000 texts and 300 minutes plus all-you-can-eat data or £10 which pre-loads 3000 texts and 100 minutes plus 500MB of internet onto the sim you recieve with the phone. As for contract prices and deals, they range from £15 to £30 a month and offer various inclusive minutes, texts and internet usage depending on the package chosen.

Update: Wait until late Q2 for Xperia S ICS update

Earlier this month, news came in that The Xperia S handset was to recieve it’s anticipated Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich update a little earlier than expected. A member of the Sony forum support team had posted saying that the ICS update for the Xperia S was coming out late May early June. This news brought much excitement amongst Xperia S owners. Unfortunately, the information given on the official Sony Mobile forums at this time was incorrect and the company have moved to rectify this information. The support staff member himself has changed his original post and reposted giving the correct details that the Android 4.0 update for the Xperia S is actually due in the latter part of Q2. Disappointing to learn that the update isn’t coming sooner however, it seems like a genuine slip-up and a genuine apology has been made. A little longer to wait will hopefully be a little longer for Sony to make sure any bugs are ironed out prior to the update being made available for the Xperia S.

India release confirmed for Sony Xperia P

More Xperia release news tells us that India is to recieve the Xperia P smartphone handset into their mobile market from as soon as the end of May.

Sony have confirmed that the handset is due to hit the Indian retail shelves by the end of the month and one online retail company already have the Xperia P available for pre-ordering with a stated release date of the 26th of May although, this has already changed from the 25th of May which was originally their stated date of release, so perhaps the date could still slip a little.

Infibeam have the black, Gingerbread (Android 2.3) powered Xperia P listed at 25,500 INR (roughly £296).

Middle East release for Xperia U

News of yet another Xperia range release is afoot, this time round it’s the Xperia U which is stepping into the Middle Eastern mobile market. The handset is now available to buy across the Middle East from electronic retailers at a cost of Dh 1,199, Sony Mobile have announced.

Running initially on the older Android 2.3 software, the Xperia U smartphone sports a 3.5″ screen with a speedy enough 1GHz Dual-Core CPU. It also features the ability to capture panoramic images and in 3D using it’s 5MP camera and has the media features of xLoud and Sony 3D surround sound audio technology to boot. The handset is available in black or white.

Sony have also confirmed that this handset is due for an Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) update later in the year.

As we start to see more of these handsets in the wild, Sony have moved to update their support website to include the user guides for three of their newest Xperia handsets, namely the Xperia P, Xperia U and the Xperia sola smartphones, shortly before the handsets themselves are released officially. Deal of the Week: Xperia S on £20.50 Vodafone tariff

For a limited time, Carphone Warehouse have an exclusive contract with Vodafone for the Xperia S. Instead of the usual £26 a month tariff to get the Sony Xperia S free, from now until May 24th, the handset is available for free on Vodafone’s £20.50 a month tariff.

The deal is available through Carphone Warehouse online or in store. The contract is with Vodafone for 24 months and your £20.50 a month gives you 100 Minutes, 500 texts and 250MB of data. Which while it isn’t a huge allowance any any front, if you’re a light user and Vodafone is your preferential network, this is a great deal.

If the allowance isn’t up to scratch though and you’re happy to not be with Vodafone, Tesco Phone shop also have a great deal on the Sony Xperia S. For £1 a month more, with O2 you can get 200 minutes with unlimited texts and 500MB data. Of course, with it being O2, you can always drop the data allowance down to 100MB, saving £3 a month, bringing the total monthly contract price down to £18.50. Alternatively, if you’re a heavy data user, O2 also offer a 1GB data allowance for £10 a month, making the total cost £25.50 a month. This deal isn’t available though O2 directly and may only be available through the Tesco phone shop website, rather than in store.

Sony partner with case makers to bring more Xperia cases to market

Sony have announced that they have partnered with several case and accessory makers, such as CaseMate to bring more case options to the Xperia range of Sony handsets. While some people prefer their handsets without any cases on, I personally prefer to give my phone some extra protection to keep it shiny and scratch free and with this partnership, it will bring a wider range of cases which, should mean there is something to suit every one.

Sony have partnered with 10 case and accessory makers so far: CaseMate, Krussel, Orbyx, Incipio, Roxfit, Muvit, Dicota, Shinnorie and Coptor. New cases and shells will be announced from mid May. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet but, it should be in line with what each manufacturer currently charges for their cases.

Sony Xperia GX and SX announced for Japan

Sony have announced two new handsets for the Japanese market. The first handset is pretty much of standard specifications. The Sony Xperia SX features a 3.7″ display with Sony Mobile Bravia and an 8mp camera, along with a 1.5GHz dual core processor. Other features will include mobile TV, mobile wallet and infrared connectivity.

The Xperia GX on the other hand puts Sony’s flagship Xperias to shame. The Xperia GX is the first phone from Sony to feature a 13 megapixel camera, while the “flagship” Xperia S (and Xperia Ion) feature an impressive but, not quite as good 12 megapixel camera. The Xperia GX also has the largest display from the Sony range. The GX has a 4.6″ display, again with Mobile Bravia built in.

These will be the first LTE Sony phones to launch in Japan and will see the introduction of three new applications: WALKMAN, Album and Movies.

The “WALKMAN” application integrates signature high quality audio technologies such as clear stereo, clear bass, VPT surround sound, manual equalizer and xLOUD™ with new innovative ways to play, discover and recommend music.
The “Album” application brings new intuitive ways to sort and browse high quality photos and videos in blazing speed, as well as providing instant viewing, commenting and sharing of photos on Facebook and other online albums, leveraging the great camera capabilities of Xperia GX and Xperia SX.
The “Movies” application streamlines the playback and viewing of movies in high quality audio and video with intelligent database search to discover more info about the movie for a rich and immersive experience.

Both handsets are expected to launch in the summer and will be available in black and white. They will arrive with Android 4.0 straight out the box.

China to see release of Xperia Neo L smartphone

Another new handset has been announced by Sony, in the form of the ‘Xperia neo L’, a smartphone handset that is due to be initially released in China.

Coming in the same vein specification wise as the previously released Xperia Neo V, the Neo L features a 4 inch display, 1GHz CPU, 512MB RAM and a 720p capable 5.1MP camera. The handset also has a front facing VGA camera. The Neo L is slightly longer and thinner than the Neo V.

Pricing and exact release dates for the Neo L haven’t been confirmed by Sony as of yet however, the news that the Xperia Neo L will come preinstalled with Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich should encourage potential (Chinese at least) buyers as this is the first time Sony intend to release a handset with ICS available out of the box.
