Android 2.2 headed to Xperia X10 in 2011?

While the Xperia X10 recently received the Android 2.1 update, many were hoping it would be Android 2.2, with a petition started months ago for the release of Android 2.2. Now, with 2.1 on most X10′s (subject to country/network) and Android 2.3 on the way, it’s led to many asking questions again about the availability of Android 2.2 on the Xperia X10.

As we’ve learnt in the past, what one Sony Ericsson employee says isn’t necessarily true, however it’s very encouraging none the less. One user sent a message on the Turkish Sony Ericsson support site asking about Android 2.2 on the Xperia X10. The response that was received back (translated) is: “SE X10 will get the Android 2.2 update during the second quarter of 2011. Work is still currently ongoing on version 2.2.” While this is good news for X10 owners, that the Xperia X10 will not remain stuck on Android 2.1, by this time, Android 2.3 will probably be on most top Android devices.

    Skip 2.2 jump straight to 2.3 !!

  • Alper

Actually what the letter translates to is “Sony Ericsson Android 2.2 Software” debut is 2nd quarter of 2011. Theres no mention of X10.

Men, how long we wait for android 2.2 or 2.3 or maybe we sell our X10 and buy a phone with 2.2 or 2.3? Come on.. SE do something!!

  • Carol

Hello.. I could not tell the differences between SE X10 and SE X10 HD… still wondering and could not understand..

kindly advise… another thing is that if the SE X10 HD (new arrival) is launched, it will cost more?

Hi Carol, the X10 HD was available in only France I believe, and the only difference seemed to be that the HD model came with Android 2.1 instead of 1.6 (although they later changed this to say 1.6) and included HD recording. These features were implemented with the release of 2.1, so with an X10 updated to 2.1, there is no difference between an X10 and X10 HD, yet there were charging about €100 more for the HD version, to get the features sooner. There were no other differences noticed between the handsets.

I’ve just had the following email from Sony Ericsson Customer Services in the UK:

    “Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson support centre.

We can confirm that the X10 range is never going to be updated past Android 2.1. Sorry for any inconvenience.

    Kind Regards,

    Omid Ramak

Guess that’s that then. I suppose it’s just to force us to buy something like the Xperia Arc!

if 2.3 is coming… why bother with 2.2???? hello Sony????? if thats true I’m gonna switch iphone for sure…

  • ianh

If this slow release farce keeps on, 2.2 must have been known and worked pre-release for quite some time, my X10 will be the very last SE phone i buy after being a “fan” for the last 12 years 2.3 is the least we can expect!
